I've heard that the hair is self cleaning but I must say, I've serious doubts that this could be true.

I saw a journalist on TV the other day who hasn't used shampoo for many years (just uses water), and I must say his hair looked very clean and "fluffy", with a lot of body - not greasy at all. Apparently, it was greasy for the first few weeks, but then the natural oils that the body uses to clean itself started kicking in and took over. I've heard this from various sources in the past, too.

I wouldn't want to try it myself, though - mainly because I like to straighten my hair, which requires certain products, and because I have scalp psoriasis, which is exacerbated if my hair is left unwashed for more than 2/3 days.

Apparently if you don't wash your hair for about 3 weeks, the oils naturally produced by the scalp start to take effect and do actually "clean" your hair. However, not only do you have to get to the 3 week stage before seeing any results, but I can't image that your hair would smell too good.
Best to stick to good old shampoo and water me thinks.

I believe that you should wash your hair at least 2-3 times a week to keep your scalp clean. And for general hygiene.

unwashed hair is truly disgusting- greasy hair feels just horrible to the touch-even worse than really dry hair!

what they mean is not washing with shampoo, you will still need to wash you hair with just water to get the daily dirty. apparantly the oils in you hair help clean it self. but you will have minging hair for a while untill it takes effect

Ew, yes! I got by with a week when I was little, but now 3 days (without swimming or anything) is the max. Your hair itself may be self-cleaning, but your scalp is not. It gets gross and builds up dandruff and dead skin cells, and whatever else you may encounter (dirt for example).
