I breastfed my son for ten and a half months. That worked for us. He was becoming less focused when feeding, poking me, sitting up, looking around and I was ready to have my boobs back. :) I think if you can do it for about a year that is great. Much longer would be way to weird for me.

The American Academy of Pediatrics reccomends Breastfeeding for the first 12 months, and then however long it is mutually desirable. The World Health Organization actually reccomends breastfeeding until the age of 2.
Here in the good ol' USA the Breast has become over-sexualized. So people think it's gross or weird. But c'mon people, that is what they were made for!

I have 2 kids. Breastfed my first till he was 14 months old. And I'm breastfeeding my second, and she is 11 months old.

I think it is time to stop when the child can ask for it by name in a complete sentence. That is my own opinion. But there are women out there who deeply believe in child-led weaning (meaning as long as they want to be a nursing child...let them decide). And that is their decision. That is what it comes down to. it really is a decision between the Mom and her babe.

The American Academy of Pediatrics currently recommends that "Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child.." * The World Health Organization and UNICEF recommend that babies be breastfed for at least two years.

it has nothing to do with weather the child can speak

I will put it this way if you feel the child is appropriate age to use a sippy cup with a valve in it that forces the child to suck instead of using a regular cup or one with a spout then they are still young enough to breast feed

How many of you people stopped bottles and sippy cups when your child started talking? that's a silly way to tell if the child is ready to wean!

OMG no the value of breast milk does not dicrease after they start solids infact studys show it continues providing benefits till the child has a fully developed digestive system between 4 and 7 years old (not that I see a reason for a seven year old to nurse but they could still drink expressed milk)

I think about 1 yr. is good. That is usually when you would start taking the bottle away and giving cups. I have 4 kids and I have stopped at different times with all. 1st: 1 month, 2nd: 1yr and 1 month, 3rd: 10 months, and 4th: 9 months. I had to stop for different reasons, but I would have liked to have done it for all until 1 year. Out of all things about pregnancy and breastfeeding, I miss that the most.

Pediatricians recommend 1 to 2 years in modern societies. In third world countries, they recommend 3 years due to poor nutrition choices available to them. That's a good place to start. As a woman who nursed for one year, I would say a good time to wean is when the kid has a top and bottom tooth (or teeth!). Once they can take a bite out of crime it's time to eat real food.

I hate to sound wishy-washy but each family is different. I am a big fan of breastfeeding, the nutrients and antibodies are vital to the health of a baby. I wanted to get to a year with my daughter. That seemed reasonable.

I have friends who breastfed for three months and a friend who made it to 3 years. I personally could not see myself breastfeeding a toddler. But, that is my own preference.

It seems like most children wean on their own, show signs of independance - my daughter transitioned herself from breast to milk in a sippy cup by 13 months. So, we made it just past a year.

when your child starts eating table food and is able to drink out of a cup, it is time to stop breast feeding.
I have a friend who is pregnate with another baby and cannot get her almost 3 year old off of her breast. The kid cries and whines, so she gives in. Now she is dealing with how to handle it when her new baby comes. She has let it go on for way too long.

Your child will let you know when to stop. Many parents pare down to just a nighttime feeding around 12 to 18 months. Breastfeeding continues to connect you and your child and there is no right or wrong answer to this question. You and your child will find the right time.
Take care.

Some people nurse for 5 years! Not me, though! I think the longest in my opinion is 1 year. I made it 11 months with my daughter and with my son I plan on 1 year. 5 more months to go.

I think most kids wean themselves, mine talked at 7 months, so i would say the 2 word rule is not always the best thing.

Around 1 year is supposed to yield optimum medical results.

well i have three boys and i breast feed them until 14 months each. And i have a 18 month old and he hasnt got sick for nothing. What is in the milk? always you might do it until 1 or earlier because then they might have teeth and bite you. So that's what i heard.
