My friend is due in a few weeks and she needs to decide to breastfeed or not. She is worried that, "it hurts". Does it?

It is wonderful to at least try it. It only hurts when the baby doesn't latch on correctly. They have lactation specialists in the maturnaty ward that will assist her if she needs it.

Well, to be honest, yes it hurt like hell BUT it soon got better and a few weeks after the birth it didn't hurt at all.
It's just that a woman's nipples really don't get used at all during a regular child-free life, and the first time they do get used for their intended purpose it's a bit of a surprise, I guess. Buy a beeswax-based ointment, it got me through the hard bits. After a while you barely notice when the kid's attached, really.
I highly recommend breastfeeding. You can do it while you're cooking dinner, eating dinner, shopping, watching a move, pretty much anything. Can't do any of that if you have to use both hands to hold a baby and a bottle. Plus, breastfeeding you can do lying down and when you're asleep, if you're careful. And it doesn't change the way your nipples look, or anything.

I won't sugar coat this one because it does hurt when the baby first learns how to latch on, but as time goes on the baby will learn how to properly latch on. But it does take someone to handle this pain a little. But with encouragement and support from others the mother will get the hang of it. Plus mother's breast milk is a whole lot better then formula. The baby would have less ear infections also less allergies to anything I could go on but it take too long but I'm sure you know where I'm going with this one, Breast Milk just has more benefits then anything. But then as the baby gets older and teeth comes in now thats another one, thats when for sure you want to break the baby off of breastfeeding. Good Luck and Congratulations.

It doesnt hurt really. it may be different for others, but both my daughters when the lathched on the first two or three days, its like a sore kinds tugging, but its not "painfull" Tell her to buy some formula and bottles, and try breastfeeding. I even brought it to the hospital when i delivered both. Cause if they werent gonna latch then i would have a back up. Just make sure if she wants to give it a try to try it first, cause some babys once they get a "fake nipple" ie bottle, they wont go back to the boob. Try both, i did with both my girls, and it helped knowing that i didnt "HAVE" to breastfeed. Its her choice.

I wasn't really sure that I wanted to breastfeed my son, but from all the persuading (or nagging, if you will), I agreed to do it. It was worth it and I'm going to breastfeed my next child as well, who is due in February. I had milk fever 3 times with my son and it was one of the most painful things I've ever had. I'm not sure that's common, but it was really the only time I ever experienced pain from it.

My nipples got very sore. I used black tea bags soaked in warm water to toughen them up. It worked great. I also felt some discomfort when my milk let down. I was VERY large breasted and could fill an 8oz bottle from each breast at every two hours. My situation may prove to be very different as I was not the norm. Good luck and congratulations to your friend.

Start with the tea bags now though, they will help!

I have three boys and I've breastfed them all and I think it's the most wonderful thing a women can do for their child..... The key to breastfeeding is don't think about the pain think about how healthy it is for your baby, how much money you can save, and the best part of it all is the bonding you as a mother get to experience with your bundle of joy!!!

Well if the baby is latched on correctly it shouldn't. When your friend delivers she should ask to see a Lactation consultant who can help her with breastfeeding and make sure that she and the baby are doing it properly so that it won't hurt.

It hurts if the baby can't latch on to the nipple just right. It might take a bit of effort on your part to get the baby to get ahold of it just right, but once it finally does, it doesn't hurt much at all.
The nipples can get sore or cracked, tho, but there is a cream you can get called Lansinoh, I think, that helps with that.
