RH negative means you do not have the RH protein-antigens on the surface of your red blood cells, so you are recessive for this genetic trait. Only 15% of the population is Rh-, 85% is Rh+, so half of those 15% are women.....and women who are RH- need to know that they are negative. If you are ever pregnant, miscarry, have an abortion your OB or midwife needs to know this info and needs to test your blood thru pregnancy. If you conceive an Rh+ child inside your negative body, that can be dangerous for the baby, babies, esp subsequent babies. Your Rh- blood can learn how to make anti-Rh+ antibodies and those can cross the placenta and get into the babies blood (esp after L & D of first baby where there can be leaking or mixing of mom-baby's blood) so that all RH+ babies conceived later can be at risk for your blood attacking theirs. It is called erythroblastosis fetalis or one of the kinds of BLUE BABIES. If not treated or identified early in pregnancy, baby may need transfusions, some babies die. PRENATAL SCREENING and TREATMENT are key! After a baby-miscarriage or abortion you should be given a RHOGAM shot to help your body NOT LEARN how to make the antibodies. If your body learns, then you should not have babies but you can sell your blood for a lot of mony so that they can make the RHOGAM shots for other RH- women.

Scientists sometimes study Rhesus monkeys to learn more about the human anatomy because there are certain similarities between the two species. While studying Rhesus monkeys, a certain blood protein was discovered. This protein is also present in the blood of some people. Other people, however, do not have the protein. The presence of the protein, or lack of it, is referred to as the Rh (for Rhesus) factor.
If your blood does contain the protein, your blood is said to be Rh positive (Rh+). If your blood does not contain the protein, your blood is said to be Rh negative (Rh-).

This Rh factor is connected to your blood type. For example, your blood may be AB+ which means that you have type AB blood with a positive Rh factor. Or, you might have O- blood which means that you have type O blood with a negative Rh factor.

It is particularly important for expectant mothers to know their blood's Rh factor. Occasionally, a baby will inherit an Rh positive blood type from its father while the mother has an Rh negative blood type. The baby's life could be in great danger if the mother's Rh negative blood attacks the baby's Rh positive blood. If this happens, an exchange transfusion may save the baby's life. The baby's blood can be exchanged for new blood that matches the mother's.

Yes I do know about it

RH- blood means you don't have antigen in the RH factor of your red blood cells

RH- contain the A and Rh antigens, your blood type is A-positive (A+). If your blood contains the B antigen but not the Rh antigen, your blood type is B-negative (B–)
