I have rheumatoid artritis, am unemployed, been denied for health insurance and can't get state health insurance. If I were over the age of 65, had dependents or were disabaled then I would qualify. I have so much pain I have a hard time getting up in the morning. Why won't someone insure me or give me sort state assistance?

It is the very fabric of this culture/society, that we value the almighty dollar more than we value the welfare of others. It is the cultural manifestation of natural selection. There have always been and will probably always be classes (castes) in societies, and until we evolve in some way to let the better angels of our nature take the lead and make people more generous/gracious and less greedy, it will probably always be. There are some societies that are somewhat better at this, but the human population in any country is so large that applying such principles to everyone is an incredibly complex and unwieldy task.

Until as a whole, we rebel against the CEOs making m(b)illions in bonuses and sport stars make similar incomes, and be willing to pass up the candy bars and impulse stands, we won't get anywhere. We seem to honor the greedy. I am no bible thumper, quite the opposite, but some of the values/virtues espoused by monotheistic religions would be good for society at large. It seems as though the id is winning over the superego, and everything has shifted to the baser drives.

My mom has RA, but fortunately has adequate health insurance. We are incredibly lucky in that regard. My advice is this: when you have good days (I know they are few), reapply, and reapply, make yourself the squeaky wheel. Demand answers, knock on doors of local and state government officials. Contact a social worker in the hospital system to get further information on resources available. Go find the largest person in the welfare line, I assure you, they know how to work the system. I wish you the best.

I will be unemployed in two weeks, and am facing similar difficulties, but have no current health issues (had cancer, it had not spread, in the watchful waiting period now).

Thanks for letting me vent on this issue.

The US health care system is broken for just about everyone. I have been working for Fortune 100 companies for over 20 years and if you think being employed is going to save your bacon then wake up. I believe only 1% of the US population is probably well enough off to afford any medical cost. I am talking about Bill Gates types... Billionaire status. At least 100 million net worth. Everyone else is dependent.... on good health,,, the government... their job. If you think your job is safe you must be living under a rock. We need to fix this in America. It is broken and for almost everyone. Start thinking about immigration :)

Because insureance companies are evil and wont insure someone who has a disease that will cost them money. RA doesnt get better and requires consent meds, which would effect the insurance companies' bottom lines. What you can try is most drug companies offer perscription assistance programs to help pay for medications.

And to whoever said something about the state only helping those who work, I wish upon you one day of unmedicated RA to see why this poor woman is UNABLE to work.

That is not entirely true. When I work in ER, more often than not, the patient is on medicaid or medicare. It doesn't matter if you do not have insurance. Most radiology exams done on these patients are never really billed. There are thousands that don't say they have health insurance, but they can come into the ER anytime.

Because as a country, our priorities are messed up. When Clinton was in office he tried to get Universal Health care, but it was voted down. We can pay someone millions of dollars to toss a ball around a filed, but we can't even have health care coverage for people who need it. It is a very sad commentary on our country. I am truly sorry that you are in this situation, so many people are in it and it is just going to get worse. Sorry to vent about this, but this is one topic that just makes me so mad when I think about it.

That is a very good point... we are the riches country but we are also the stuipidist and most disprespectful.

I wish I had an answer for you, but I do not. our counrty would rather pay a baseball player millions then feed school children lunch, we will spend monies on tabloid freaks..but not give one dollar to the local food shelf.

Good luck......
