child support is for what it say to support the child, yeah she would have to put a roof over her head anyways but would it have to be a two bedroom??? Can she pay the bills without it, what good is it if the kid could have a video games or 100 books to read if she can't keep the lights on. Being a single parent isn't the easiest job and it isn't always easy to find a job that will pay what you need to make it kids are expensive and many parents even married or coupled struggle to make ends meet. In most states the amount of child support a person receive is dependent on what BOTH parents make. But if she is using the money to support the up keep of the child, not buying herself clothes and partying and drinks, then she is in the right.

The child support is for the portion of the child's rent, food, and utilities that the supported parent receives from the other parent. Just as if you had a roommate, the law sees the child as using their share of living expenses. So yes, it is mainly to pay bills because without a place to live and utilities and food, the child will not survive. These are the basics child support is for.
As for things like sports, private schools, etc., these are luxuries. Some parents have sued over what the child support is being used for outside of living expenses. It is up to the parent with custody whether these optional activities take place. The non-negotiables are food and appropriate shelter.

Well after reading all of the other answers on here, I can tell that not to many of you have children and are getting child support. I had to fight like hell to even get money from my child's father. He wanted to give me 90 dollars a month. Please.... like that can buy a lot for a child now days. My daughter eats more than that in a week. So when I got my child support, I use it for bill and rent and food etc. I think that when you are using it for bills you are using it for your child. If I don't pay the light bill, we don't have lights, and everything that runs on elecricity. Just because it is called child support doesn't mean that you should only use it for buying thing your child needs. It should also be used for things that keep your child safe, warm, a roof over their head and food in their stomach. It is up to you what you use the money for. I can use it for any dam thing that I want and no one on here who hasn't been where i have been should act all high and mighty and say that someone cant pay bills with it. I am willing to bet that half of you have no idea what it is like to raise a child on your own and wonder where the next months rent is coming from. Living on one income is not easy and it doesn't pay for everything and child support helps keep us alive.

Child support is for making sure the child is safe and secure. Which means food, lights, roof over there heads. I do not agree with everything being spent on bills a little should be for the child. A certain percentage.

This is just ignorant. Is the child living in the house? Does the child need/use electricity, water, and food? Does the child require space, in the form of a room with furniture and rent to pay? Of course child support pays bills. And clothes, and groceries, and other things the kid needs.
Toys, eating out, summer camps are luxuries.

Child support is supposed to be used to care for the child. Clothing, food, medical and dental, the child's hobbies or sports. However, if the child lives with the parent who is receiving the child support, it is safe to assume that the parent can use some of that money to pay for shelter and utilities as the child needs these things as well.

you obviously do not have children or have never been a single parent, or had to live on a budget. any good parent gives to their child first regardless of whether they are receiving child support or not. that is taking care of all the child's needs and most of their wants. so when the money finally gets their they have to use it for the needs of their household. it doesn't matterhow much you make if more is going out then coming in you have a problem. when you become a parent you'll see its easier said than done

child support is from the parent of course that is not there, but is still responsible for that child. I don't feel if you use it to pay rent or anything else that is a need , which is food, clothing , and shelter you are meeting that need for the child, now if someone gets the child support and buys beer or drugs, that is now a different story and that is taking away from the child.

Child support is for clothes, food, bills to keep a roof over the childs head, etc. It should go 100% to the child, I would try not to even pay rent with it if you don't have to, but use it for school supplies, after school classes/activities and their associated fees, or if your child is younger, diapers, wipes, formula, bottles, etc. I hate it when people use it for themselves instead of for the child. If it can be proven that you've done that legally, you can get in big trouble.
