No they are not. According to my Spanish prof, machismo dictates that men say Te quiero, which means I want you. Te amo means I love you. They are used interchangeably in the Spanish language.
Te = you
Quiero = (I want) the conjugated form of querer which is the verb "to want"
Amo= (I love) the conjugated form of Amor which is the verb "to love"

I love you => "Te amo"
I want you => "Te quiero"
I like you => "Me gustas"
The difference is in the feeling. Usually you 'love' your family, or couple. And you 'want' your friends. 'Querer' (to want) has two forms in spanish:
1) I want those shoes => "quiero esos zapatos" (possesion)
2) I want you so much => "te quiero tanto" (feeling)
