Actually, the manufacture's warranty is up to the descretion of the manufacture themselves. There are no laws stating that they must give you any type of warranty. Most on-line services though will usually give 30-90 days. You could complain to BBB, but not much else can be done. Take another look at the site where you purchased the item, if there is any mention of a warranty, the company is bound by the writting on the screen.

to specifically answer your question, in the U.S. a manufacturer does not have to honor a warranty if the product is not purchased from an authorized reseller. the U.S. government does not interfere with such policies. however several manufacturers will honor the warranty regardless of where you bought it. this practice of "authorized dealers" is fair. any merchant selling product they're not authorized to should be avoided. many manufacturers prohibit the selling of their product on line, unless it's within a certain distance of their closest local brick and mortar store. this practice has been in effect for over 30 years.

If an item is not purchased at an authorized dealer they do not have to and will not cover/ honor the warranty.
Unauthorized dealers would be along the lines of eBay and such.
There are no such laws that permit them from covering your purchase. I believe it's due to the fact that they are usually bought in larger quantities by the online retailer and are usually bought on the cheap due to slight defects and/or blemishes upon manufaturing.
It's usually a case of buyer beware when dealing online.

No, a certain amount of the purchase price is for the warranty. If Cheap Joe buys something from the manufacturer for less money and then you buy it from him to save money, you in essence did not buy the item with the warranty.
So you are out of luck. Buyer Beware!
Hey, the item that you bought might even be hot! Remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

this is due to how they can verify when the item was purchased and if it was new. if they cant verify it then they will not honor it soley because they cannot verify how long it has been in use. only certified retailers through the internet is more security for them. for info about consumer rights i think you can go to better business bureau sorry i dont know the site for it but i know they deal with customer complaints against corporations and if the corporation doesnt respond to them they get a file reported about them that kind of gives them a bad rep which they dont want. I know because the company i work for had to respond to a customer complaint filed with the better business bureau.

Yes. if you bought it form a company or person who is not authorized to sell the product, then they do not have to honor the warranty. That is what makes buying on Ebay even more hazardous.

if you bought it from a discount store - the warranty would be through that store. Read the fine print. The product may say Toshiba but the warranty is through the store and not Toshiba directly - I would take it back to the store. Read your receipt it might tell you more info about the warranty.

Look for a local consumer protection agency in your area and ask, if the good are new then you should be able to get some satisfaction. You might also like to contact the seller because although purchased online you should be able to get a refund. Good luck!
