Harold & the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson...
It was my favorite book as a kid, and admittedly it is still my favorite book.
I gives me hope today that anything is possible...

Hello to y'all from inside the Yahoo Brain in New York City!
Hope you're catching the live webcast at: http://advision.webevents.yahoo.com/asktheplanet/brain.html ! If you are, you probably just saw me pick my nose!
Anyway, I can tell you from personal experience reading to my son, who just turned 4. He loves all the Dr. Seuss, but he has two absolute read-aloud favorites. The first is the Berenstein B-Book, because of it's continually compiling storyline (Big Brown Bear. Big Brown Bear, Blue Bull. Big Brown Bear, Blue Bull, Beautiful Baboon. Big Brown Bear, Blue Bull, Beautiful Baboon, Bicycling Backwards, etc., etc.) Seems repetitive, but the kids LOVE it!
The second is There's a Wocket in my Pocket. He loves the rhyming, to be sure, and every time he finishes, he finds similar "creatures" all over his room. Some Blapes inside his Drapes, or a Marpet in the Carpet. You get the idea He can never get enough. And as he dad, I can never get enough either. They're both so fun to read, and his smiles and laughter make them even more fun!
Hope this helps!

Any of the Pigeon books by Mo Willems. Junie B. Jones is great for chapter books. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak. I look for books that have a repeating phrase so I can pause and the kids can finish the sentence. Helps to engage them in the book. Also, Robert Munsch is wonderful. he is also an author that writes back to kids!

Absolutely anything by Robert Munsch. He is complete genius!!! (okay I gotta admit that the fact that he's Canadian didn't hurt)
This man is amazing. You can usually listen to his featured books on the website below. I collect every book he's ever written.
