Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and has nothing to do with sunlight or exercise. I've never heard of preventing it from happening. I have suffered from depression my whole life. Five years ago I found the right medication for me - Zoloft, Wellbutrin and Abilify. That was after several years of experimenting with various medications. I have no depression or side affects and I am living a normal and happy life......)(

Renee,
I do not think you can prevent it from happening, much like other illnesses. You certainly can try by living a positive lifestyle, eat right, do not use illegal drugs or abuse legal drugs and or alcohol.
I believe that some people are genetically predestined to suffer from Depression. The important thing is if you feel you are suffering from Depression seek help immediately .Also,if you have friends and or relatives that are suffering from Depression remember it is an illness ,and a very serious one, so encourage them to get help.

Sometimes a stressful situation brings it on. Remove the stress, and the depression should go away.
Sometimes it happens because of side effects of other medications. You may be screwed in this case.
Sometimes it is genetic and due to a supposed imbalance of chemicals inside your brain. You are most certainly screwed in this case.
They say sometimes a person gets a stress response spontaneously--like a sudden rapid heartbeat, dry mouth, sweaty palms, etc. So look at what stresses you and try to get rid of it.
But if you think you are having trouble, see someone like a doctor or mental health professional. Effective treatments exist, but because of the nature of the condition it is difficult to get the victim in for help.

For a long time.
Avoid bad situations.
But it's life. Something will always go a way that U don't want it to just try to handle it well. Whether it be on your health, money, family,or relationships with friends and boyfriends. Sorry hun but it's unavoidable. They have medicine for it,but medicine doesn't cure it just calms ur feelings down. To help it while U have it,I say do something physical and write in a journal talk to a counselor or a good friend or family member. do something you enjoy, and try to enjoy life. Its all you can do. Good luck.

i dont really think you can prevent it from happening. the best thing you can do is keep busy doing something to make stop thinking about depressing thigs. being alone makes things worse expecaly when you have nothing to do. just dont do anything crazy that i would do. im depressed, im alone most of the time a have nothing to do most of the time and it make me go crazy i hate being alone all the time.

good advice on all post so far. Been there.
Excercise until you get tired every day...get up early...drink plenty of water all day....cut out all sugar and colas....limit coffee.....eat lots of types of foods, but healthy....take a good multivitamin every day...do something selfless for others every day
I am amazed at how this simple plan keeps me positive and moving.
Some days I'm blue, but much less than it used to be.

Go out. And try to be ocuped in something you like to do. Keep in mind that live is and has many things to enjoy. Analyse your problems for resolving them integrally or, if its necesary let things (you need to) that way.
