I suggest you contact your local community college...most offer adult and continuing education classes and many feature Photography classes...my local college offers Photography and Digital Photography for $75.00. The $75.00 covers 8 weeks of classes at two one hour classes per week...good luck and enjoy, it's a great hobby.

I am like you, not a pro but love to fool with it. I am still stuck in the film era so I can't say for sure what the letter codes mean but an educated guess is that Av is Aperature and P is portrait and M is manual. I think that if you visit Canon.com and go to the product support section that you can probably download a PDF manual for you camera model. (I have done it for much older equipment).

In very basic terms, all photography is related to doing 2 or 3 things. Framing the subject(s) that you want to capture in the picture, getting the desired focus and depth, and capturing the correct amount of light that is reflected off the objects that you are trying to take a picture of. The capture process is a combination of the lens opening (aperature) and the shutter speed. The correct combination of the 2 items and the light source gives you a quality picture. I suggest that if you learn the basics from some of the many (inexpensive) film photo manuals that are available it will be easy to translate to your digital camera. Your pictures will improve and your passion will grow.

If I was you and in fact I was a few years ago. I would go to cannon dot com and see if they have any tutorials on your camera. If they do not know their own camera who should. You could google canon powershot a520 and see if anyone has any info on care and use. You could also check out the local comminity college for classes on digital photography, or schools online most do. Check out local camera clubs. EZ

The other answers have covered most of the best ways to get your answers. You could also go to your nearest retail store, that sells Canon cameras, sales people love to explain all you need, hoping you come back and buy a new one.

Look on Canon website for that model. Email them your questions. Maybe you can order the manual or download it PDF file.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=photography+101&btnG=Search leads us to such nice links as http://tlc.ousd.k12.ca.us/~acody/digi1.html , http://www.graphic-design.com/photographic/photo_101.html (yes, it's film, but photography is about controlling the light, and light-caqpture medium matters less than your skills in managing light).

IMHO, that should get you started. Good luck with this hobby - it's great.

Cheers,
Stas.

P.S. Camera manuals also have a pile of useful info. ;) .
