I live in Spain, I moved here 12 years ago. I found that I picked up the language really quickly through interacting with Spanish people.
I tried classes, but they were not as much use, as I found that I learnt "perfect spanish", which is not spoken over most of Spain.
Also, I agree with other suggestions, my boyfriend is Spanish, great way to pick up the language, and once you've had Latino, you never go back.
hasta luego.

you have to how to say it "experience" it and where I am it is all around you. In the buses there are ads in Spanish; on the tv programs in Spanish; during the day I come in contact with people who speak Spanish and more important I speak Spanish with. So take notice of it and use what you know to learn more. People see that you are serious; you will have plenty of amigos to help you. Some books on grammar, you know, the basics. But, pick up your words from what happens to you the world going on around you and shouldn;t take too long .. two or three years if you work at it.
this is really not tips is it? make a rule to learn a new word every day and then do it. Get friends who are doing the same thing and then share your words with them. Send them your word for the day with correct examples of how to use it. And like that. it is a good tip.

An evening course, or at least some contact with a native Spanish speaker is a huge help. Also get yourself an easy to use dictionary. (not just a phrase book)
As you start learning, get yourself films in Spanish or subtitle them, get Spanish magazines and newspapers watch Spanish TV (if you can) Even if you hardly understand a word to start with it gets easier once you have practised listening a lot.
Listening and understanding is important as the Spanish can speak pretty fast when they get going! XD

I am as white as they come and I learned Spanish by moving to Central America, studying the language a half hour every day and getting out and talking to people every day. Tough, but I speak very fluently now.

Oh it's really not that hard! Just go to an educational store and purchase a book! Spanish is an easy language to learn. Though I only took Spanish One so I dunno! It could get more difficult along the way for all I know! :D Good luck! :D

don't learn it from the outside...interact with the actual culture and people...get to know a spanish-speaking family and ask them to help you out.
spanish is not really a hard language and it helps you out with more complex languages with french because of the latin roots.

The key is grammar. By really learning the grammar you really learn the language. When you know what tenses etc are being used its easier to understand what being said (obviously assuming you have the vocab) because you can identify whether they are talking about hte past etc. It'll make you more fluent aswell because you're not trying to think about the tenses and word order in your head before you say it.

Watch shows on HBO or another channel that broadcasts in Spanish on SAP and put the closed captioning on so you will be hearing Spanish and reading English.
