I'm not certain whether you are asking because you are one and need clients or whether you are asking because you are not one, but are wondering who hires them. Since we've been in the business for 30 years, I can answer both questions. If you are one looking for clients, you need to more narrowly focus your efforts. You are looking for people who don't have the time to do it themselves and want to live in an environment that reflects the people they are, the lifestyle they have and the places they have travelled.

If you are wondering who hires them, mostly people who don't know how to execute their ideas, their dreams and concepts about how they want to live or cannot agree about what will accomplish their goals and best take into account who the people are that live in the space.

That mostly accounts for the residential side of the business. Commercially there are a lot of other types of clients who need to accomplish business missions and goals with the environment in which they are doing business. Sometimes it is for an internal clientel (people who work there) and sometimes for external clients (people who buy the services or products the business sells). Many mid to small cap businesses cannot afford to have a resident design team able to create the the type of space the business needs to accomplish it's goals. So, they hire interior designers trained to manipulate space to best meet their needs.

People who don't know the difference between a paint brush and a toothbrush. Okay maybe that is over stating it a bit. There are peoplw who can't tell one colour from another. Some people can't see what something would look like in their heads. Without a picture they are lost. If you are not one of them, rejoice. If you are get someone who can to help, an interior designer can be a big help.

Exactly - who needs an interior designer - use your imagination - throw a few pebbles around your front room - paint it green and pink then trim the curtain pelmets with fur and you've done the job yourself - oh, and dont forget to charge yourself £1000 an hour and wear ludicrous clothing .

People who don't have a lot of self-confidence, who are afraid of making a mistake and who don't know how to research their options. Go with your heart, do what you love, and to hell with rules that someone else has made. It's YOUR place, it should be set up to please YOU.
