I am not sure of what type of cusine you are interested in, so, I will give you a few. If you are looking for a nice view, go to SheepMeadow Cafe in the heart of Central Park...they offer charcoal grill delights. For Japanese food, I would recommend Haru, they have many locations, visit www.harusushi.com. For italian food there is IL Bagado at the east village...so home style...yummy. or Tatine, the French cusine in west village. My favourite place is the french seafood place called Blue Ribbon in Soho....so goooood.

There is a little Italian Bistro....I believe it's on 44th street and 9th Ave....and I think it's actually called "44 south"....it's on the corner and it has the street number in the name(sorry, it's not hard to find though). You can't miss it if you're there. It's owned by a little Italian family, the Hostess is actually the original owner, little Italian grandma. The prices are VERY reasonable for NYC and the food is delicious. It's near the theater district. I can't say it's particularly modern, it's more a romantic bistro type place. All the dinner entres were between 14 and 18 dollars. Hard to find that in NY. I was just there a month ago.

NY Times food writer Ed Levine has great recommendations if you post on his website: www.edlevineeats.com.
My recommendations would be the stand-bys Union Square Cafe and Gotham Bar & Grill or newbees Spice Market and Craft.

It's not trendy, but you still might like it.
It's an Afghani restaurant on St. Mark's. Gosh, I can't remember the name, it's been a while since I've been. Great food, good prices, nice ambience. (not spicy)

Hard Rock Cafe -or- Planet Hollywood Both are loved ones pleasant, have a quite a laugh surroundings, and are low-cost. I in my opinion just like the meals higher at HRC. If you are into track, cross with HRC. If you favor films, cross with Planet. Happy Birthday!
