Most airlines have different ages when they stop mandatory Unaccompanied Minor services. Most US Domestic flights do not require the service for children 15 and up. At the age of 15 you are treated like an adult. A lot of kids travel back and forth between parents all the time so, they are used to it and never questioned. Ive had 16 year old show up at the ticket counter alone and we never question them. As long as the child has proper documentation as far as passports and Visa's then they should be fine. You may want to carry a notorized letter stating the parents know the child is traveling alone and abroad. That way if there are concerns in Customs, they will not be detained. In all of the years Ive work for an airline, Ive never seen anything happen.
In the case of run-a-way's, authorities were usually waiting for the flight when they arrived.

Well, if the child is accompanied by a parent, there is no age requirement. If the child is alone, I believe it depends on the visa requirements from the country the child is travelling too. 16 is definetely old enough. I was 16 when my parents sent me abroad to visit family.

I believe the age for unsupervised flight is 12. But i might be wrong. I know a child cannot leave the state they live in without permission of their gardian until they are over 16, but it seems that its different when flying or taking the bus or train.
and thats in this country. I believe you have to be 18 to go alone to other countries. call the airline, they will know.

At united our policy is that if the legal guardian chooses a child can fly by his or her self at 12 years of age domestically.

Any age is alowed to travel abroad. The usual procedure is to call the Airlines and let them know in advance. They will see that you are assigned a steward to escort you on to the plane and to meet who is picking you up at your arrival airport.
