A marriage license is the document you present to whoever is performing the marriage to show proof that you have received permission from both the county and state authorities where you are getting married.

The marriage certificate is the document that authenticates your marriage was performed by a duly authorized person to perform marriages in the state and county where the marriage took place.

What country are you in? In the USA, you go down to your local county clerk's office and pay for a marriage license. The minister or judge signs the license when they perform the ceremony and mail it back to the county clerk. The county clerk then mails you your marriage "certificate". If you were "married" without a license, you are not going to get a marriage certificate and you are not legally married.

Marriage certificate is what you receive after you get married, Marriage license is what you apply for to get married. If you have a marriage certificate then you are married.

when you go to the courthouse and get a license and pay a few bucks, they give you a license, you take that to the church on wedding day. the preacher signs it and says he married you, you turn that in at the courthouse and they send you a certificate. you can mount it and put it on the wall or not. you might be living in sin. if you don't have a license, you aren't married. not legally anyways. you usually have to have a blood test too. I haven't gotten married in a while but as far as I know everything is still pretty much the same.

No, a marriage license isnt the same as a marriage cirtificate. I had to go to city hall to get the license, then you bring it to the place you are getting married, then send in for a copy after the wedding when all the info is filled out. The marriage cirtificate is what you get after the wedding that proves the marriage until the license comes in the mail.

A license and certificate is the same thing. After you get the license a justice of the peace, priest or pastor performs the ceremony and you are legally married. If there is no license signed it was basically a commitment ceremony and there is no legal rights as husband and wife(no community properly, right of inheritance if the other person dies and can't be added to each others health insurance).Legally you are seen as living together. If a child is born the father is not automatically recognized and will have no legal rights even if his name is on the birth certificate.

In most states, you go to your county clerk to fill out forms, pay a fee and get a license to marry. After the ceremony, you file the paperwork, and they mail you a certificate that you use to prove you are married (to employers, the DMV, etc).
If you did not do any of this you may not be married! Check with your county government for the laws.

It should be the same thing. You are supposed to go to your County Clerk's office and pay a fee for the "certificate" or "license". Then you have to have your Officiant sign it and turn it back into the county clerk's office.

If you did none of these, you are really only spiritually married.

Google "County Clerk" and whatever city you live in. It should have a whole site dedicated to explaining the procedure to you. Good Luck.

Required by law. The certificate is from the person that married you, the license is what makes it legal.
