Why is there so much RC bashing?

Why do so many people bash Catholic Church? Don't Protestants know that their whole theology and beliefs are about protesting the Catholic Church? That's why they are called PROTESTants. Is it guilt?

A great deal of what you describe (pretty accurately) as Catholic bashing in Protestantism comes from the Protestant rejection of the Magisterium-- the whole idea that the Church, as the Body of Christ, has authority and knowledge. An underying theme in Protestant Christianity is "Sola Scripture"-- that the only authority in the faith is the Bible. For the Roman Catholic Church to claim otherwise is anathema.

Of course, the New Testament (which wasn't actually formed until at least the year 382 AD, leaving the first three centuries of Christians without official Christian Scripture!) never says "Sola Scriptura"-- that the only authority should be the Bible. The closest it comes is at the end of Revelation, where it says that no one may add or take away from what St. John the Divine wrote in the Book of Revelation!

[In fact, Martin Luther, one of the primary leaders of the Protestant Reformation, wanted to dump the Book of James, which he called "a Gospel of Straw", because of its emphasis on works over faith (1).]

Much of the Protestant resentment of the Roman Catholic Church has to do with the Roman Catholic claim to speak authoritatively... including their claim to be the same Church which Jesus founded when He named Peter ("...and on this rock I will build my Church"), and which, under Pope Damasus (2), finally set "in stone" the list of books which we know of as the New Testament. It goes against the Protestant idea of "No authority but Scripture, and everyone can equally judge what Scripture means".

[And, as I look at most of the responses to your question, it's clear that the bashing of the Roman Catholic Church is continuing unabated, in this very forum-- and at a level of vituperation that surprises and saddens me. As it is clear that the question was closed by a Roman Catholic, it is equally clear that some of the people responding really don't care whose feelings they hurt, so long as they can make a point. I write this as someone who is not a Roman Catholic, but rather an Anglican, priest.]

Actually, it is common knowledge by now that the RCC has had its 'bad hair' days... well, of late it has been the scandals perpetrated on young kids --which is really bad. The problem has been HOW the Church has been able to manage keeping SECRETS HIDDEN from the public eye for so long, since way back when... that the backlash is now coming to the fore like a tsunami wave that cannot be stopped.

Some five hundred years ago, people DID PROTEST against the doings of the Mother Church, hence the Great Reformation that started Protestantism. And all protestations were/are fair and valid issues that remain germane in today's discussions on matters of faith and doctrines.

HOWEVER --unbeknowngst to those Protestants of yore [as well as to newer denominations of today]-- the BIGGER ISSUE is the USE of the SAME BIBLE as the main source of theological teachings... which more and more becomes apparent that "certain entries [or lack thereof]" have been altered, excluded, edited, corrupted, reconfigured since its earliest compilations and subsequent translations by the Mother Chuch.

There are far too many doctrinal issues suitable for discussion under separate cover but THAT's the rub right there...!

WELL I DO NOT BASH ANY CHURCH but wwhen the bible says thou shalt not worship any graven images or have any others gods before me for i am the lord the one and only , then why dont the catholics live by the bibles 10 comandments , when they drive by a cathlic church they do the father son holy ghost thingy, when they go to confessinal they do so many hail marrys , well where are they asking god to forgive them , after all we do not have to confess our sins to know one except god then theres the virgin mary pepole of the catholic faith when they see the pic etc of her they kneal down pray etc , then when pepole think they see the image of christ in a window or on a tree etc they all gather to worship and pray etc , pepole need to realize that know matter what religion etc you r there is always gonna be another person of another religion bashing it , its life .

Read history sweetheart. The catholic church murdered millions of Christians and strangled life on this planet for about 1200 years. It is yet to apologize. They cover up their crimes, take money from the people and send them to hell. That's enough to make everyone hate them-the church that is, not the poor ignorant parishioners.
