I think they like the coolness of the water in the porcelain sink/toilet and it is usually fresher than water sitting in a dish all day

Hi, some cats will only drink running water - for some strange reason (although cats are known not to be water lovers). If she drinks from the toilet is it only when it is flushed?

You can buy a water fountain from most pet shops which is plugged in and filtered water falls into a bowl.

Some cats prefer not to drink out of a bowl because the water can become stale and then has a strange smell to animals. My dog, Pepper, sniffs the water and if it hasn't been changed recently will not touch it until it has been renewed! Best wishes, Sandie

All cats does this. Yes I know the answer to this question too. My cat has done this. The water in the cat's bowl is never as fresh to a cat than the one in it's water bowl called the toilet or the sink or the faucet. You can deter the cats or cat from drinking in the toilet by remembering to keep the toilet lid closed always then they are forced to drink in their water bowls. You have to also wash with soap and hot water a cats feeding and especially their water bowls or they won't drink from them. This has to be done everyday. If the bowls are plastic the cat won't like to drink from it. The plastic smells and the taste gets in the water and the cat won't like the water therefore; they won't drink water and possibly get a UTI from this problem. Some cats are allergic to plastics too so you may have to change the cats dishes to glass ones or chna. When I brought this up to my vet before he said for me to get something that looks like the toilet so, I went to Walmart in the people dish isle and got to white porcelain dishes that resemble the toilet bowl. Not a good thing for the cats to drink form the toilets because they could get poisoned from toilet cleaners or residue from toilet backups. I put my kitty on distilled water I buy from the stores and he no longer has to drink out the faucet, bath, sink, or the toilet anymore. I can even leave the toilet seats up and he won't drink from them at all. he is well satisfied now with the changes I've made concerning his drinking habits. I was almost going to purchase one of those cat water fountain but you have to plug them into a wall socket and a water source......too tedious for me and it cost too much money. The problem can both be resolved by behavior modification by both pet and pet owner. Stop letting the cat drink from the sources you mentioned. Again keep the lid to the toilet closed always. Do not let the animal drink from chlorinated water sources. Crystals will form in the cats urinary tract especially bad for neutered boy cats......like mine.

The water in the toilet is cooler than the water in the bowl. Also, contrary to popular belief, cats prefer water that has set for a few days. The reason for this is that the cat can smell the chlorine, and other chemicals, that are present in tap water. A possible solution, is fill a bottle with water, let it set in the refrigerator to cool down, and see if your cat prefers this.

Because the water is fresher, my dog will only drink water from a bowl when he can see me fill it with fresh water, but he drinks the stagnated water from outside. Funny things animals.

He use to love drinking from the loo when we had a low toilet. But the loo we have now is too high for him.

You have to make sure you don't use bleach etc. while your cat is doing this.

Try putting a pint glass of water down for the cat and I bet they'll love drinking from it.

The water in the toilet, believe it or not is the coldest water in the house. Maybe your cat likes to drink water that is colder then room temperature. Also the bowl could be the issue, it may rub against your cat's whiskers. Cat's hate that.

Cover the toilet and keep the sink dry and your cat will eventually drink from the bowl. Right now the cat is satisfying its thirst by drinking from the other places.

Hi. Does water drip from the sink? Cats like moving water. Cats and dogs like toilet water b/c the porcelain makes it cold.

The way our water is treated means most cats will not drink it, when it is clean. Some therefore only drink milk as their owners think it is better then not drinking. However milk is not good for cats, they will usually find their own source of water. Hopefully outside, as it is quite off putting to find your cat in the loo!!
However in hot water, my cat will drink rain water from our water butt, in any bowl.

It probably knows that you allow it to drink out of a water bowl. It might like to walk on the wild side. At least the wild side for a cat.
