Not exactly true. I can only assume that the person is inquiring about fat. If so see the following. If not you would have to first know the exact ratio of fat, carbohydrate and protein comprising the 'pound' you write of.

If you were to eat one pound of fat this is how many calories it would contain.

A few things first...
In one gram of fat there are 9cal.
in one ounce there are 28g
in one pound there are 16 ounces

So we can extrapolate how many calories would be in a pound by some math

(16 oz/1 lbs) * (28g/1oz) * (9 calories / 1g of fat)

The ounces and gram units cancel out leaving 16 * 28 * 9 = 4032 cal per pound of fat.

There are exact 3,500 calories in 1 pound. To lose 1 pound of fat in a week, one must create a calories deficit of 500 calories a day than the maintenance level.

I've always heard that you have to burn 3000 calories to reduce your weight by one pound. That would probably be fat, which is high in calories.

in order to lose one pound of fat you must have a deficit of 3500 calories. so either cut back the calories in your diet or exercise them away.

Pound of what? Pound of carbohydrates(bread) contains 1700 cals. approx. Pound of fat(butter, ghee etc) contains 3400 cals approx.

1g of Carbohydrate= 4 Cals.
1g of Fat = 8-9 cals
