The Holy Ghost, the Third Person of God with the Father and the Son, is the presence of God promised us by Jesus Christ just before Jesus ascended into heaven after the Resurrection-- in St. John's Gospel, the Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit, in modern translations) is referred to as the Comforter (1).

The Holy Ghost was also present at Creation (2), and at Jesus' baptism (3).

What makes the Holy Ghost holy is the fact that He is God; what the Holy Ghost does is strengthen our faith and comfort us in the face of this world's hardships.

The Holy Spirit is not an it. The Holy Spirit is God, part of the Holy Trinity, along with God the Father and God the Son (Jesus). He comes into your heart when you accept Jesus as your savior and helps you lead a christian life.
