stretch marks is caused by sudden change in weight--usually a lot of weight loss
skin is flexible--so gaining weight would cause skin to stretch out more--so no marks would be available
but when you lose a lot of weight in a very short period of time--stretch marks are left--since the skin has retracted back
the thinner people who have stretch marks--is because they have lost a lot of weight

For the same reasons that some people get stretch marks during pregnancy and others don't. I had no stretch marks after four pregnancies, my sister-in-law had lots after her first pregnancy, which drove her bonkers. But the bottom line is, people's skins are different and some will tolerate more stretching than others, whether the stretch comes from body weight or pregnancy.

It really depends on your genes and how elastic your skin is! My husband is very fit and has never been overweight but he has stretch marks on the sides of his chest and waist from working out and building muscle. His skin just isn't very elastic. My best friend who is very overweight, however, has no stretch marks. If you are trying to prevent stretch marks I would suggest you moisture your skin daily with cocoa butter (great moisturizer) or perhaps use a shower oil(baby oil works great). My sister is doing that now that she is pregnant in order to prevent stretch marks on her stomach. She rubs cocoa butter on her stomach after every shower and before going to bed.

Stretch marks are usually worse on some people because of pregnancy.

The rate a person gains weight can have a big effect on whether they get stretch marks and how bad they get them.

stretch marks are the stretching of the skin, if their weight fluctuates, they get stretch marks, if they stay at a relatively large weight for an extended period of time, the stretch marks "grow" away.
