Breathing CO2(carbondioxide) eases hiccups. Breathing in a closed environment (like a paper bag) increase CO2 intake, thereby helping ease hiccups. Holding breath does the same.

"Hic!" You've just hiccuped for what seems like the tenth time since you finished your big dinner. Wonder where these funny noises are coming from? The part to blame is your diaphragm (say: die-uh-fram). This is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest, and all hiccups start here.

The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.

Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes. Some cases of the hiccups can last for days or weeks, but this is very unusual, and it's usually a sign of another medical problem.

You've probably heard lots of suggestions for how to get rid of hiccups, and maybe you've even tried a few. Holding your breath and counting to 10 is one way some people can get rid of their hiccups. Other people say that drinking from the "wrong" side of a glass of water is the way to become hiccup-free.

Putting sugar under your tongue might work, too. And maybe the most famous treatment - having someone jump out and scare you when you're not expecting it - helps some people wave good-bye to their hiccups. Boo!

The best method that I have seen that works everytime is frightening the individual with the hiccups. Kinda like telling him/her that there is a real hairy spider on his/her head, or some other really scary stuff... something that is legitimate for the present situation and something the individual can readily believe. When a person is scared, he/she misses a breath or two, and this corrects the involuntary contractions of the diaphram, which is the cause of hiccups.

Sock a friend in the face while they are not paying attention. They will be so busy trying to get you back that you will completely forget about your hiccups while trying to run away, and when it's all done, you will probably not have them anymore. *hiccup*
I hold my breath for about 30 seconds, and breathe in twice really quickly.

OK you can either do the water upside down one like the one above where you just tilt and drink from the opposite side of the glass. This one has always worked for me however; my new friend showed me away that she does it and I tried it and it worked. Take a glass of water and get a paper towel. Put the paper towel over the top of the glass and drink through the towel. It gets a little messy because the paper absorbs the water but it works wonders :)

this is a method both my wife and I use successfully....

find the bone in the middle of your rib cage (sternum) downward until it stops.. with one or two fingers apply pressure to the fleshy area below this bone while breathing deeply, and slowly, focusing on the sensation of your fingers touching this area.......

a hiccup as I understand it is an uncontrolled spasm of the diaphragm.. by placing pressure in the area described, it seems to allow for regaining control of that muscle.

drink water upside down...but you dont have to be upside down...just tilt your head down and drink out of the opposide end of the cup, instead of pouring up you're pouring down.
