Many Muslims say that Islam is not just a religion, it is rather a way of life. They say that politics is an integre part of Islam and no muslim will go to heaven until he/she tries to establish an Islamic state.
My question is that we all know that there is always a difference between theories and reality. You might have a very good theory, but when it comes to reality it proves wrong.
To validate those claims, can anyone tell me if there was ever such a successful Islamic state? my understanding is that islamic state, like any other state by the time, was full of assissanations, killings, wars, discrimination and hunger periods.

I might agree with you, but don't forget that the Rpoman Empire was proven successful for an extended period of time.
Also, I have never heard of people kill themselves to re-establish Roman Empire today. What have gone is gone.

Some people consider the Ottoman Empire a "successful Islamic State."

Was there ever a successful Christian state? How about a successful secular state? You know, a state that had no assassinations, killings, wars, discrimination, or periods of hunger.
There's no such thing as a perfect nation. However, there have been Islamic states that ruled in peace and encouraged both the arts and the sciences and were tolerant of other religions, as did the Umayyads of Cordoba.

Maybe you should look at the pass.
What happen when the Islamic want to develope nuclear? NO said Bush and friends but YES to non-Islamic country! So fair, ya?! Then, they will look some reason to attack some country! 9/11 is one of America plan ( Muslim didnot involve in 9/11 - look at http://www.ReOpen911.net - this web develop by Christian not Muslim ).
But still got some Islamic state that Bush and friends forgt to 'spy'. Like Brunei, Malaysia, Turkey... they just focus to Middle-East but not out of that area.
Malaysia is the 1st Asia country that built the highest tower ( before this the record just for Europe country & America ). Non-Asia country so suprise when Dr Mahathir ( Malaysia Prime Minister that time ) said Malaysia will get a highest tower.
Most of non-Asia country thought that maybe China, Japan o Korea will build it and not the not famous country like Malaysia. But after Malaysia, Taiwan take place as the country that have the highest tower. And Malaysia at no. 3. Dubai will get one too. If Dubai tower completed, it is mean top 3 just for Asia! But like Mahathir said ppl can build the tower more high than KLCC, but Malaysia still the no 1 bcoz Malaysia not build just a tower but TWIN TOWERS.
See... still got Islamic state that free from 'America'.

You have got this whole thing wrong, heaven or hell isnt determined by any muslim trying to establish an islamic state, that isnt what we beleive in.
Islam is a way of life and that is to worship allah alone, do good deeds outlined in the quran and sunnah and keep away from commiting bad deeds.
It isnt compulsory on any muslim to establish an islamic state, that would be forcing islam on people which isnt what we do, all we are supposed to do is invite people to islam using reasoning etc.

it was more than an Islamic state. it was a very successful empire as hard as it is to believe. in fact, it was the biggest empire in the history of the world. it used to spread from China to Africa. that's almost the whole world. that was back then when almost all Muslims used to follow their religion and be among the righteous. Muslims used to be so educated, that it was a Muslim man who came up with algebra.
