The person is passing all the other areas of Navy basic training, and would also like to know if going into another branch of military would get rid of a dishonorable discharge?

There were plenty of people when I went through boot camp with Navy that problems swimming (one girl had never been in a pool). They teach you! They'll spend as much time teaching you as they have to.

Asking the recruiter or company CO's Admin might be able to help. This definitely begs the question of why you joined the Navy when YOU CANNOT SWIM. The people you are going to ask for help are going to want to know the answer to this, or you risk coming across as someone who makes bad decisions on a regular basis. Make sure you know the answer to that for darn sure.
Afaik, you don't get a Dishonorable discharge for being unable to swim, so something smells a little fishy here. At best, it falls under the heading of either a general or Administrative Discharge.

A person should not receive a DD for not being able to swim. The person you are talking about will get an entry level separation. It is not honorable or dishonorable. It is like the person never enlisted. It would be like getting a new job and you find out that you can not do the job. So they just let you go. No positive feedback, no negative feedback. Tell the person involved not to worry about it. It will not be dishonorable.

They wouldn't get a dishonorable discharge because of swim and once they got discharged they would just apply to one of the land based branches.

Hey Rookie,
They do not give a dishonorable discharge to a guy just because he can not swim like the other people..
If need be, you can make it... Quit worrying, they loose very few people because they can not swim.

being unable to pass the swim test is not grounds for any other type of discharge but an Entry level Separation. They will work with him until he passes, even if he gets rolled back a week or two. The swim Qual is NOT that difficult to pass.If he cannot pass it, there must be something else wrong with him.

if the person can't pass the swimming test administered by the military it is called sink or swim policy, and trying to go into a different branch won't do either, there is a thing called records(military) and they last forever

My dad was a marine and he couldn't (and still can't) swim so don't worry unless you want to be a Navy Seal.
