Stay away from all of the major brands like Iams, Pedigree, Purina, etc. (but you probably already know this based on your supermarket comment)

Any of the premium brands will be excellent for your German Shepherd. Considering your breed, I would recommend Solid Gold, but any of the premium brands will be good. For example, Chicken Soup, Eagle Pack, Wellness, Canidae, Innova, etc. are all excellent.

Once you identify which major brands you want to try, be sure to have your dog taste test them. For example, many dogs love Wellness, but our dogs cant stand it. They prefer Innova and Chicken Soup.

Hope this was helpful!

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul. It has the best ingredients. I know Iams is involved in cruelty but so is Purina and all the other big business dog food providers.

The Iams company is supposedly claimed as performing disgustingly cruel tests on animals; dogs and cats which they keep in bad conditions and locked in tiny cages in dark areas. I wouldn't support them; they are a common target of animal rights activists. I would go for Purina Dog Chow large breed formula, as it is specially formulated for a large dog breed, such as a German Shepherd.

I feed Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice formula. It has a single ingredient protien & a single ingredient carbohydrate. There are several quality foods out there in addition to the Natural Balance line. Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, and Evo to name a few. My dog has food allergies, so we went with the venison formula. Kudos to you for knowing that you can't get a decent food at the grocery store.

Nutro! It has no "by products" and is reasonably priced. I've fed a lot of foods to my dogs and kennel dogs over the last 28 years and this is the only one I recommend now. My dogs have been doing great on it for ten years.

Any food that list a meat as one of the main ingredients on the back, also ones that use rice instead of corn, and if your dog deficates alot try a different brand as it is probably not getting the right nutrients, and as far as companies doing animal testing, let all the people who oppose it volunteer for the test themselves...

I would go with a good quality dog food such as Iams, Science Diet or Purina One.

Personally, I believe in keeping the dog lean to keep its hips healthy, and Eukenuba makes a weight control formula. Your vet will back me up on this.

I got Iams for my adult dog. I would suggest anything with a formula for large breeds, as this will give him/her the extra nutrients for his/her specail needs

I have heard Iams is the most nutritionally complete for all dogs.
