If you want to try and prove your religion to a non-Christian it seems rather silly to quote The Bible.

Think about it...

Why do we quote Sir Isaac Newton when studying gravity?

Why do we quote Carl Sagan when studying the cosmos?

Why do we quote Albert Einstein when studying physics?

Why do we quote mom & dad (or any respected authority figure) when we have to make the choice between right and wrong?

So when we study a spiritual issue, we quote scripture. As with any source we quote we have to do the leg work to find out if that source is dependable and true. Funny thing is, it will take a lifetime of trial and error and self realisation to be able to say if the Bible is a true source (and by the time you figure it out you will be dead).

Even this website expects us to want to quote a source.

For me to say this is my own quote means nothing really, even though I may sound eloquent and my words may incite some emotion in you that wants to agree with what I say, because I am who I am my words have little weight. But if I can quote a source and give evidence for its truthfulness, then their is more reliability in it despite how subjective you may say it is.

Are you willing to trust the people and what they are quoting?

I agree. That's something I was debating with my *very* religious friend, just the other day.

He said the reason they do that is because the bible has been backed throughout history by so many scientific facts, that even if you don't believe in Christianity, you should look to it for information.

Personally, I think the same could be said about 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but I don't plan to build my life around that, either...

They quote the bible because that is the basis of their belief, it's like if someone were to quote a textbook on another answer. In religion the "holy books" are factual and therefor are used to back up their beliefs.
With Christians being so bashed on here for their beliefs, and their outspokenness, they need something to back them up.

Its not, its stating fact, but you should also walk through it in interpretation as well, other wise alot of people don't understand what you are talking about, that is why christians are to spread the word as the desciples, that we may have a more understanding of the text. If someone came up to you and told you something, but had no evidence to back it up, it would be hard to believe for most people.

Why do non-Christians get upset when we use the bible to back up what we believe and say? It's not about religion. Nothing silly about it!

The Bible is a solid tool. Even if you believe everything in the Bible to be false or made-up, the positive lessons and moral values are worth teaching.

The Bible is Truth, it has answers for everyday life and eternal life.To me It seems rather silly to quote darwin. Evolution in an insane unproven theory, how can you believe in it?

Because the Holy Bible is the only "proof" they have. They accept it with blind faith. Reason, open-mindedness or heaven forbid, questioning ones source of beliefs are sacrilege. Christians are generally good people, somewhat hypocritical but close-minded when it comes to anything outside their indoctrination.

Yeah, you go. Why do all those silly mathematicians use their stupid textbooks to base and prove their dumb theories? E=MC 2 indeed, why not E= ME! And why do the judges refer back to their antiquated law books to rule on current laws made by Congress ?
And while we’re at it who the heck is Strunk anyway, or Webster , or Funk, or Mr. Britannica? Why refer to anyone but yourself? Apparently you are your own god who deserves the utmost self respect for his own authority and vast wisdom.
