I'm turning 25 this august and my mother has a very good rule about my presents, "they have to be practical or they have to be able to last more than five years"
My graduation presents consisted of a ring for Highschool, and a necklace for College. For my 22 birthday, I recieved a safety kit for my car if it ever breaks down. She bought a washer and dryer when I turned 23 for herself, so I got those. When I turned 24, she remodeled the kitchen, so I got a dishwasher, and one of our old mowers. Practical things seems like a good idea for your children when they're in their 20's and just starting out in the world. Hand me downs are fine, as long as they work :P

How about a gift card or gift certificate to his favorite store(s)? Guys don't really like to shop for one reason or another, but gift cards do seem to make them more apt to go out and get themselves something. And with gift cards, he gets exactly what he wants, unless he's not smart enough to buy the right size in clothing or something, but then that's his fault.
My boyfriend just had his 24th birthday and I got him gift cards for a school supplies store because he's a school teacher and a big and tall clothing store because he's 6'3". He really liked them.

Cash is always the best route.. That way he can get want he really wants or needs for himself and not feel pressured to show his appreciation and gratitude for something he either didnt want or didnt really need...

basketball hoop, if he plays basketball. But I don't know, it seems like you should know your son a lot better than us, especially if he lives with you.
