My dog is an outside dog. He is not neglected. He has his own area in a kennel setting. I noticed flies around his ears and looking closer saw a sore. What could be causing this and how should it be treated? Yes, his kennel is kept clean. Help!!

A lot of people think they are providing great care for their animals, you may not even know that dogs are pack animals.
They want to be with someone at all times. They will feel neglected if left alone. That is how the pack alpha (YOU) punish other members of the pack.
Now, to answer you question
The sores on his ear is because the flies automatically know this is one of the easiest spots to reach (the skin is thin and soft there) without the dog being able to get them off.
They can sit there and chew and chew to their nasty little hearts content.
The vet can give you a medicated spray/salve to put on the bites to help with the pain, and keep the flies away.
If you are financially unable to go to the vet at this time. And believe me I know how expensive vet trips can be. Bring the dog inside and apply a first aid salve (even a cheap brand will work)
to his ears. Keep him inside at least long enough to let his ears heal. The first chance you get, buy and apply fly spray to his body and outside his ears. The vet will carry a good brand fly spray.

An ear infection. This can be extremely painful for your dog to have an ear infection and then on top of that flies eating his flesh. Ear infections smell and will attract flies. Simple.

Take him to the vet.
And, why would anyone want a dog if it is not laying by your side in the house! You are neglecting your dog. Dogs are pack animals and enjoy to be with their pack. You and your family are his pack.

They make an onitment for horses called SWAT it can but used on dogs ears to get rid of the flys. They will not bite if you put this stuff on the ear tips.
It comes in pink ot clear and works great.
It is safe to put over sores and can be used on dogs.
You smear some on and leave it on it satys for a day ortwo then you just apply more.
You can get it at most any farm type stoe like Tractor Supply or Boomgaars.

Ever wonder why there is a fly called a "horse fly" ...some fly just like to attack us mammals. They have creams you can buy, or you could try the vaseline like suggested above. That is if the only problem is flys. There may be other issues going on as well. Do not apply creams, or vasiline to open , broken, or infected skin. You may be better off talking him to a vet...see what cream they would recommend also.

check for fleas and ticks at once! the flies are probably attracted by blood. take him to a vet to be screened for parasites, he probably has them by now. good luck.

It sounds like he has an infection and needs to be seen by the vet immediately. They can give him antibiotics. If it's untreated, it will get worse and he will have maggots. Please do this right away!
