The difference between beast and human beings is the ability of humans to choose, as opposed to acting purely on instincts. Some have said that our moral nature is what distinguish us from animals, our capacity to tell right from wrong, nevertheless we must choose between our available options. This means that our choices can make us more human or more beast like. Hence we have people who act like beast...The answer is then: We make ourselves persons or beast through our own decisions...

The acts of compassion, understanding, sympathy, Love and sadly hate is what distinguishes whether or not a person is what I'll call human or nothing more than an educated beast.

Self-awareness. (The fruit from the Tree of Knowledge.)
But then again, I am not convinced humans are necessarily alone in this ability. I believe it is presumptuous and vain to assume that other animals with high intelligence do not share this trait. In fact scientific studies suggest that some do.
My own belief is that humans, like all creatures, are living expressions of the divine and eternal absolute. Our knowledge of ourselves is a special aspect of the nature of that divinity. As you can see, and as our myths reflect, it is both a blessing and a curse.
