I am just curious about this. I don't want to get involved in religous debates. I just want to know is this a career-or occupation where they earn salary or is this more like volunteer work?

There are some that do some don't. Alot of the mega churches are set up as corporations and the Pastor is in office everyday working, so he should recieve a salary.

Preachers are hired by the staff of deacons of the church, with a majority vote of the congregation. They are paid a salary from the budget of the church, the budget that is funded partially by the contributions of the congregation, and partly through investments the church may have that pay.

It's a career, they have to go to college and earn degrees if they want a big-paying church. Although some have just sort of risen from the ranks; it's not a requirement to be college-educated. But like any other career, the big bucks go to the degreed.

Most Pastor receive a salary that is set by the board of directors.
As a Pastor myself however there are those that pastor a church strictly out of love and concern for others.
Actually my ministry costs me money and time but then anything worth doing has a price associated with it.
Being a Pastor is a calling more than a profession, career or occupation.
I am a CNC machinist as a profession.
I am a Pastor because i love the Lord and enjoy helping people.

I think most church pastors earn a fixed salary. Some speakers may be speaking from the pulpit as volunteers. Right now our church is looking for a pastor and we have people to volunteer to give Sunday sermons. But we do not expect our future pastor to be working for free.

Yes, most of the time preachers/ministers are paid by the church. The church's funds come from the congregation who pay tithes and offerings and such. It's a salary based on donation, like any non-profit organization.

In the majority of Christian churches, the minister is given a set salary. This is determined by the size of the church, the number of office hours the minister is expected to fulfill each week, the cost of living in a particular area. . . and many other variables. I feel that's it's only right, if a church expects a minister to meet their spiritual needs on a full-time basis, it's only right to provide support for him (her) and his family.

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (also known as the Mormons) none of the leaders or ministry, including the missionaries are paid for what they do. They all have their own jobs and earn money just like the rest of us do... I know that some other religions, that is their profession, so yes they are paid.

I know a few who make very large salaries. Not only that, it seems that some people believe that if the give them things (furniture, cloths, cars ext.) it somehow makes them look better in the end.
