Sweetie, I have locks and you do have to wash your hair. Not washing your hair is nasty, and I am offended that anyone would presume that dreads are dirty. First you have to determine if your hair texture will lock. If you have straight hair with no kink to it whatever, you are gonna have a problem. I am not saying that it is impossible, but it will look nasty, especially if it's blond. If you have kinky hair and are pretty sure that it will lock (or mat) then you should start with a CLEAN head of hair. use a little oil, or lock butter, NOT BEESWAX..talk about nasty. Anyway, add a little of the oil/butter to the root and shaft of your hair and two-strand twist each individual piece from root to tip, then put a silver clip on it. repeat this step until all of your hair is twisted. Please remember the clips...sit under the dryer for about a half hour so your twist can set. Wash your hair once a week and palm twist your twist then sit under the dryer weekly. How long it takes your hair to lock is determined by the texture of your hair. Straight to mildly curly hair will take months longer to lock than kinky hair. Oh yeah, if you choose to lock, please know that once your hair has locked , the only way to take them out is to cut your hair to the root. So please don't do this lightly. I sincerely hope this info helps you. Good luck!!

I totally agree with windows it is not something to do lightly and you do have to wash your hair. My husband has dreads they are long and thick near his bottom, I am the one that takes care of them for him and washing them is long-winded and tiring! It takes over 2 hours to do that is without moisturising the scalp after. These are more than a fashion statement. Consider the pros and cons seriously.

Try the link it is a site for dreads on straight hair (European).

if u want sturdy locks start with short hair it is eaiser to work with
just wash your hair with a good shampoo, do not use a conditioner it will make your hair softer and defeat the purpose
when after a period of time your hair starts to mat up just pull the
natties apart and kinda roll them in your palm keep this up cause it takes a while but always always keep your hair clean

or you can go to a salon and get them started there and also maintained there but who wants to pay to have nappy hair
bet Bob and Rita Marley never went to a salon to get their hair did

How do you not dread the dreadful? Maybe with locks ...

To do them properly, you would have to have the right sort of hair but some people get the effect by not washing their hair, or using a special shampoo which matts the hair together. I usually just do tiny braids instead.

Just stop washing your hair, for the "authentic" look. Actually you can buy wax for it that washes out easily, You just twist little sections of hair and rat them a bit.

Just don't wash your hair!

It will take quite a few weeks though to get the look.
