My son is going to turn 8 and wants a trip there for his b-day. He just told me that thats what he is getting and I asked him why do you think that and he said because that is what I wished for last year when I blew out my candles. It isn't something that we could do now but maybe in the future. Any advise is welcomed. Thanks

I did the same thing for my son, I promised myself that before my son turned 16 I would take him to another country and I did. I am from the USA and took him to Perth, Australia. The tickets will range from about 2-4 thousand dollars round trip. I was lucky and was able to stay with friends while we were there. My son loved it so much that we eventually started the process of permanent residence. I am not sure if you have passports or not, but his will be 80 and yours will be 160. At least that was the price a few years ago. I know Quantas has a special 999.00 from L.A. and you get to stay in 3 or 4 Australian states for 2 days each or something along those lines.
My advise.. Research every bit on the internet. Make notes.. and never settle on the first one you see. I have done that even with the shipping company I am using to send our stuff over.
Good luck.. you'll love it over there..

The airport tax alone would shock the hell out of your pockets but it's prices are average with the few items that are expensive and then there would be others that are cheap. Travelling by bus and trains would save you quite a bit while takinbg a cab can make you bankrupt.

If you have the time and enough set aside then go but if you are on a tight budget, no holiday would ever be fun. You also have to tell him that wishes don't always come true.

Some things are cheaper. Some are more expensive.

For touristy stuff my experience is that the dollar amounts are pretty much equivalent, but one Australian dollar is worth abnout 75c US, so you have an advantage on the exchange rate.

Distances are pretty big, though, so travel between various tourist attractions can be quite expensive and time consuming. A flight from Brisbane to Perth (across the country) could cost between AU$400-600 or more, for example.

The distances can be big if you are going from one coast to the other. So that chews up a lot of cash. It depends a lot on what you want to do and the exchange rate at the time. Just don't expect to fly from the east to the west and back again cheaply. Plan your trip well.
