You can get a great ring for much less than 2-3K. But, do go to a fine Jewelry store.

I think Zales is a great place to get an engagement ring. They several different types of stones, with various prices.
As far as how much you should spend, that is entirely up to you. I personally told my boyfriend that I don't want him to spend more than $700 on my ring. My viewpoint being that we could use the extra money he would be spending on the ring could be put toward better use, like paying for something for the wedding, or starting to save for a house.
Good luck and congrats!!

zales is an option, but you have to be pickier there than elsewhere. honestly if you're going with a chain store, do Jared's. Local jewelers will have more unique pieces, but they also have poorer warranty plans. and trust me, you will need a good warranty plan!

You should avoid the mall/chain stores and go to an independent jeweler with a good local reputation.
