Not all the people are that good at using photo editing software; I guess the digital zoom is there for them. However, a good photo editing program should do a better job than the digital zoom of the camera.
I personally prefer to shoot my photos in optical zoom only.
I should also point out that I've also seen some digital cameras with a fairly clean digital zoom.

NO digital zoom, Is important and is better then Cropping another photo. The resolution may be less, but the picture ends up turning out better

Yes, the resolution will be less by using digital zoom than by cropping a normal photo.

The Question is good but the answers can be confusing if you don't have all the facts.
The Digital zoom can have an advantage if your camera has software to manage cropping with its own program to improve the result. If your computer has this feature it would make no difference to the end product. You will need to read your camera manual to see what it offers as well as what your computer software can do.
Do it both ways and compare the result.

When taking a picture try to avoid using digital zoom. I always zoom in using optical and when it gets to digital zoom i'll stop. It's better to crop the regular picture. I think it looks sharper.

Digital zoom electronically enlarges the image and this decreases picture quality. If you use a 4X digital zoom, the camera is taking one pixel of picture information and turning it into four pixels. If you are looking to buy a new camera always choose one with optical zoom rather than digital. Your pictures will turn out clearer and you'll be more satified with your purchase.

Yes, digital zoom just makes the pixels bigger. Easy enough to do on your own. Always look at the optical zoom numbers when comparing cameras.

cropping pictures is too much work and can be risky, so find a better digital camera with more mega pixils that way the resolution is better when zooming in on something
