This is a condition that results from being on a drug called Heparin, used to thin the blood, which as a side effect in some people can cause a drop in your platelet (clotting cell) numbers.

It is usually diagnosed when a person on heparin has a drop in their platelet count, which then recovers when the heparin is stopped.

The blood thinner Heparin can cause the platelet count to drop. When there aren't platelets, there ain't gonna be clots. This can be a good thing, like if you're trying to keep somebody from getting blood clots in their legs after they've had a hip replaced. On the other hand, it can be bad if it causes a person to bleed out. It would be diagnosed by a platelet count, ususally as part of a CBC (complete blood count). It could be clinically suspected if a person had developed purpura (lots of little pinhead-like lesions clustered in a small area).

Thrombocytopenia is any disorder in which there are not enough platelets. Platelets are cells in the blood that help blood to clot. Heparin is a blood thinner drug and over time can cause this clotting condition. Also aspirin can cause the blood to thin leading to a form of this also. take care.
