Hi, This is a good question... It was actually thought up by Adolf Hitler, he took the shape from an egg. proving that the egg at its points are stronger. Good thinking. He then approached Ferdinand Porsche Sr., whom was employed at the time by Hitler to oversee and design many military machines, tanks and amphibious vehicles. He then started on producing the Beetle and after the liberation of Germany and the end of the war the Beetle still stayed in production under the watchful eye of the British forces and the new British type government of Germany at that time. Hope this helps.

Some claim that the vehicle was based on a sketch that Hitler drew in 1932, a year before he came to power. In truth, the "official story" is that Ferdiand Porsche had designed the basic parmeters for a very similar vehicle several years before, but was unable to finance the project. Although Hitler's sketch may have influenced the Type I's overall styling, the vehicle was in essence the realization of Porsche's earlier design, with a few modifications, which was finally possible because of the Third Reich's financial backing.

Believe it or not. Hitler drew it up and Ferdinand Porsche designed it. They started it and everyone else in Germany at VW added to it later.

As 'Yes Its Me' says, it was designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, at the behest of Adolf Hitler who wanted to create a 'people's car'.

to add to GeekiVs' answer ferdinand porsche went around germany to all the major car manufacturers of the time and was turned down either because the car did not fit in with their range (as with Benz and BMW) or the company was working on their own cheap car project, as with opel.
