A muffin is a quick bread and a cup cake is, well, cake. The difference lay in the way the batters are prepared. Muffins start with a flower/shortening mixture, and cakes start with an egg, sugar and butter/shortening mixture. In muffins, the wet ingredients are added to the dry. In cakes, the dry ingredients are added to the wet. Just to name a few differences. Also, cupcakes have frosting, and muffins usually do not (all be it I would certainly not be amiss to such an idea! I love frosting!)
