Whatever you do do not do what the first person said you. To get them working properly provided that you are not on a firewalled network (like school uni) is make sure whichever firewall software (windows/norton) complete ignores the bt torrent program (whichever) you are using. Even if you are behind a firewall it will still work just not as well.
Then go to http://www.mininova.org this is the easiest site to start with and you know it is safe. Search for what you want (tip save the torrent files in a folder before you open them so have can restart the torrent is you have to turn the computer off) basciall try not to have more than 10 torrents open at any one time ( depends what connection you have under 1mb i recomend no more than 2 torrents at a time). another tip always read the comments on the torrents (on mininova on a tab just above where you click to download) this help in making sure you are download the best file.
PS downloading copyrighted material is illegal and can result in large fines so i can in no way condon the use of torrents (but at least you will not get virus like limewire kazza etc)
Also the reason you can not preview is that it download it in lots of very small bit from all over the file so it could download up to 99.9% but that last 0.1% is 2 seconds in, this expecally matters with video as avi file are extremly difficult when it comes to missing data

well, i presume that the file you have downloaded was just a .torrent file. in other words, it is just a reference file for a program to recognize what you are downloading and which server you will be connected to. of course there are some legal issues dealing with BT where internet priates use the program illegally to share files, however there are also legal site that provide torrent service too. the program i recommend in using BT is either bitcomet or azureus, all free programs that allows you to get your hands on those goodies from the internet. any competent search on a search engine with those names will return you the program. of course, there are many other BT programs out there, but bitcomet and azureus carves out around 70% of the users.
once you install one of those programs, re-open your .torrent file and the program will activate, prompting you to enter a destination for the file you are about to download. BT unlike other p2p softwares does not download files linearlly, but rather download the files in pieces, so you can not preview the files downloaded. also BT speed varies because of the number of seeders(people who has completed download and are just distrubting) and peers(people downloading along side you and also is distrubting) you are connected to. if you notices that your speed is a bit low, go into the preference settings to cap your global upload speed.
I hope this will answer some of your questions, but as with any program, pratical experience is the best tool.

Uninstall all Spyware scanners, delete all anti viruses, and then disable your firewall. Then go to your Internet browser and set the Internet zone to low, and then set your machine to expect all cookies also delete all Microsoft patches and disable automatic updates. Then download all active x controls, and then reply to any and all junk email. If you have a broadband connection then leave it on all of the time. With this method you can have a faster Peer to Peer experience knowing full well the full extent of its capabilities.

this would nicely be a NAT problem. if you're utilising a router, log into it and word once you've NAT Enabled, then bypass to concepts in bitlord, then Incoming TCP/UDP pay interest port i'd recomend utilising port port 6882 If it nevertheless does no longer artwork make effective you're outdoors of the DMZ Firewall. you could attempt this through logging into your router, opt for DMZ then style the most suitable 2 didgets of your ip take care of. then enable. wish this helps.
