I have often pondered this question too. I believe that scientists would say that human evolution involves a new genetic trait that resulted in some, but not all monkeys.

Some say monkeys, some say birds, fish or small rodents...it's all weird.

In my opinion, I find that the evolution of mankind is a complex thing. If you believe that man evolved from monkeys, then I take it you do not believe that God created man. (If you do, then I apologize.)
And to make you aware, most scientists don't ask "Did man evolve from apes?" Instead, they ask, "From which apes did man evolve?" Apes and monkeys are different as well; apes are tailless, whereas monkeys are not.
But to finally try to answer your question, I, like others believe, that we didn't evolve from apes that are still existent today. (Again, but that question brings up so many more.) In reality, there are a [small] percentage of us that believe that in evolution, instead of there being simply one "line" of an evolution (like so many seem to believe), that there are many others. Like, Australopithecus come from apes, but they evolved into human beings. Another would be that those primitive apes further evolved into orangutans, gorillas, and etc.
I hope this answered your question.

well theres divergent evolution:
there are 2 groups of the same species and 1 evolves and becomes a new species.

also the monkeys and apes were still capable of surviving even though they didnt evolve.

evolution is directly related to "survival of the fittest"

as seen in homo sapiens stamped out the neaderthals (or however you spell it)

i suppose that monkeys and apes manages to live cooperatively with "man"

just because one evolves from another, doesnt mean the later necessarily disappears.

There are still monkeys and apes because man did not (I repeat....DID NOT) evolve from apes.
