Im not exactly sure what you mean by that but the reason ppl look at the back is to see if theres a signature due to the fact they all have to be signed to be valid unless it says SEE ID which then in that case most people then look at the ID to go with it and also that magnetic strip is just an easier way of reading all the information on the card without having to punch in all those numbers on the front. Thats why if the strip on the back gets to worn out you have to either put the number in manually or get a new card sent to you. Hope this is what you were looking for.

They ask someone or they look it up on the internet. I looked infor for you. As follows.
The stripe on the back of a credit card is a magnetic stripe, often called a magstripe. The magstripe is made up of tiny iron-based magnetic particles in a plastic-like film. Each particle is really a very tiny bar magnet about 20 millionths of an inch long. The magstripe can be "written" because the tiny bar magnets can be magnetized in either a north or south pole direction. The magstripe on the back of the card is very similar to a piece of cassette tape fastened to the back of a card.

Well, when you go into a store and use it, they normally scan the back of it and you can always ask what that means. That's how I do it.
