No, I don't think there is written anywhere in the Bible nor the 10 commandments that thou shalt not watch nor read Harry Potter... people put to much into everything and not enough in the things that truly matter

I am a Christian, and I can tell you that it is NOT by any stretch of the imagination a sin to read Harry Potter. JK Rowling is a Christian, too, and she has woven a lot of themes based on her beliefs into the books.

In fact, she once told an interviewer that she didn't make a big deal about her faith to the media, because if everyone realized that she was a Christian, everybody would be able to figure out how she is going to end the series in book 7.

If you come up against people that insist on telling you it's a sin, don't be discouraged. Make them a copy of the essay on the website below and give it to them, it might shut them up. You know in your heart if you are right with God when you read the Harry Potter books, and no one else can judge you for it!

The issue is that you are reading something that will potentially take you away from the word of God, ie: witch craft, etc. While people can read Harry Potter and not practice witch-craft, etc, there is a chance that people will start imagining being able to cast a spell, etc. So the real question is - why introduce the possibility that it can happen. This is why people may say Harry Potter is bad - because we are to shun even the possibility of being tempted. Another example would be to avoid going in an adult book store. While we could go into the store and not purchase anything or read anything - we should avoid going into the store in the first place.

Hope this helps as to why people may think Harry Potter is bad. People may not be influenced by it - but why invite the chance or possibility that it will?

I would say no. I'm not a practicing Christian, but as a historian, the view I take is this: Most Christians are taught to fight against witchcraft as that power is supposed to come from Satan (therefore most witches have entered into some sort of deal with the Devil and the power they wield is a result of this deal) so most Christians automatically have a kneejerk reaction to Harry Potter due to the magic elements involved. However, the magic that exists in the Potterverse is not a result of a sordid deal with Satan, it just is. Some people can use it, others can't. Their is no real mention of religion in the books, so the critics have no leg to stand on when they use that argument. I would actually say that it is a morally uplifting story, it has an abused orphan who does what is right despite everything against him and is waging a war against an evil person. I don't see where the problem is.

I too am a Christian and I love the Harry Potter books and movies also. As long as you understand that it is all fictional then its all good. You arent worshipping Harry Potter, you are simply enjoying the adventures of a fake character in a fake world. Unless you are going out and trying to perform curses on people it is not a sin.

Of course not. It is a purly fictional book, and in no way promotes witchcraft to kids or any balderdash like that. I have heard some very fundamental christians try to claim that it promotes witchcraft and things like that (they actually held a book burning that made national news a few years back), but that is just bull. In fact, it actually has the whole good triumph over evil mentality in its premise. I do not wish to mock anyone's belief over this, but believing reading Harry Potter is a sin, or that it is corrupting your children is just pure overboard no matter what way you look at it.
And as for the bookburning, that was just riduclous. If you have read the book, no it is not a sin. If you believe it is, than don't read it, but don't try to impose your beliefs on others and condem simply because they don't agree with your beliefs.

No, it is not a sin. It's only a movie. It's not like you actually believe it's real. I was really into Anne Rice's vampire novels and was totally fascinated by the idea of the Talamasca, but I know it's not real. I'm a faithful Christian, too (and probably a damned site older than you are)

Besides, Harry Potter is just adorable. Nobody could blame you for being "in love" with him.

Proverbs says repeatedly that we must guard ourselves against letting this world into our spirit. The things we look at and listen to, the things we read all affect us in some way.

Having said that, I must say I loved the Harry Potter series too. What a rich fantasy, can you imagine, a school like that? It's wonderfully packed with fantasy, and is the classic good against evil story. As long as you realize this, and understand that it is for pure entertainment purposes only, go ahead and enjoy. If you are unsure, match it up with what Scripture would say in such a scenario, and then you'll have a full picture.

No. Watching and reading Harry Potter isn't a sin. What gave you that idea?

If it makes you feel bad don't read it or watch it. I personally think that Harry Potter is very entertaining, and not a sin.
