I often correspond with guys I meet through an online dating site and am under the impression that they have been married and are divorced based on the fact that their profile says they are divorced. I am a little weary of men in their 40's and 50's that have never been married (is their something wrong with them or are they not the marrying type?) so I tend to chose men who have been married before because just because someone has never been married and hasn't been divorced doesn't make them any better because they could have lived with a woman and abused her or been the cause of the break up. After talking to some guys and even meeting some , I find out that these "divorced" guys have only lived with woman and consider it divorce because they were common law or something although they never really considered themselves married or had an actual divorce. If I had know they had just lived with women, I would have never talked to them to begin with. Should I just delete them?

I certainly would. A guy who stays with a girl for a while and then leaves without any commitment? Be wary of them.

You shouldn't advance any kind of relationship if you don't feel comfortable about it.
If you feel you got cheated a bit by false information on their profile, maybe you should meet them since they're not the type of guys you are looking for.
But again, just because they "lived" with woman and not actually married before doesn't mean they are abusive or violent. There are alot of men that are divorced because of their violent & abusive behavior, sterotyping isn't gonna help you choosing a good one here.
Try to find out more info on the guy before meeting him is the best thing to do, I hope you'll find the one you're looking for.

I think you're placing too much value in looking for easy clues by which to judge guys. You can only guess at what those clues mean. The real test isn't divorce or not but how comfortable you feel with the guy. People can change, and a good man makes mistakes and tries to learn from them.

they are not divorced at all- they are still married and using you to cheat.
why not just judge each guy on his own merits and stop debating about why he was and wasn't married? maybe you are not such a great catch either and what if people judged you because you use online dating services instead of just going up to a guy you find attractive and saying hello?
