Not really. The inmates are in charge of the asylum no matter where you go. Even atheists end up submitting themselves to the dictates of the religious nutters, because they are the ones writing laws.

Absolutely!
I would phrase the question the other way around,
"can you live while submiting yourself to an authoritian religion?"
I think the most important thing in life is to honor yourself and be true to yourself in all things. This is how you build self-esteem.
with an authoritarian religion you would be living someone else's life, not your own.
I do believe in a God of my own choosing, a benevolent God who loves me no matterwhat. A God that wants the best for me, not one that wants to rule me and my life.
You can do a perfectly good job of developing a good value system that feels right for you without a authoritarian figure hanging over you.

Your question is sort of vague, but the obvious answer is yes. We each have a choice to submit or reject whatever theology we encounter. Now to live a life seperated intentionally from God is not a life I would choose to live. Jesus promises that through him we would not live life but live it abundantly (that is a whole other topic which would take longer than we have here to explain).

No, since people have an innate need to want to believe in a higher power, there will always be a religion of some sort. Also, since a lot of people look for someone to lead them they will always give someone the power to tell them how to worship, and what interpret there religious text for them. It's impossible to get rid of.

That all depends on you. To what extent are you willing to submit yourself to that particular religion? As far as I know, no religion that is existing on this earth today, has power over an individual any more than that individual submits themselves to it.

Of course we can live. All men make choices every day. It is very difficult to submit to religions. It is much easier to submit to God through Jesus Christ. Religions are made up of religious doctrine. It is doctrines that divide us. Jesus wanted us all to be one, that is one in the Spirit, trusting to the Spirit to enlighten us in those things we are not clear about. But instead of seeking God with all of our hearts we often go to "men of Go" or the "clergy" to find answers and often they are wrong. So how do we submit to authority knowing that they are often wrong. I have recently struggled with this and God showed me a way of seeing it that makes it easier for me to submit. If I may share this.
It started with the 10 commandments. Many today believe they are no longer counted. However God's word says that "not one jot or tittle of the law" is erased. Jesus came to fulfill the law, and not to end it. He said not only do I say to you do not kill but do not even be angry. He said not only do I say to you do not commit adultery but do not even look with lust upon a women. I then see that the 10 commandments are just the beginning, a foundation of righteousness. The Church is another one of those foundations, like family , a starting place as Jesus started in His family and community and the Jewish religion. But He went far beyond it through His relationship with the Father and His Spirit....as should we. The Church today would confine us within their regulations. But we are not confined. We are free to be all God has purposed us to be. Going to Church is kind of like going to a one hour devotional with fellow believers in Jesus. But my life can be so much more. I can operate in the gifts and fruits of the Spirit as Jesus did. No one can stop me from ministering as I go about my day. It starts with love and prayer. I can love others in many and abundant ways and in doing that I can open the door to use the gifts of the Spirit.

That first person is an idiot. So you have to be an atheist if you don't belong to an authoritarian religion?
I am unaffiliated with any religion, believe in God and doing just fine!
