best thing is for them to be on their own.

If not married, then you should not be living together in the first place, however, having another couple living with then is also an option, since neither one of the coupls has decided to commit to one another then the safest thing would be for other to live there, so that one is not stuck with the whole responsibility if something happens.

It's much better for couples to each have their own space. No matter how close you all are, you don't want someone to be in all your personal business all the time, and that's what happens. No matter how big the house or apartment, you Will soon discover things about your friends that you didn't suspect. On the other hand, you can afford to stay in a nicer place and share the expenses, but it all depends on what's more important; money or privacy.

Only in rare family only situations should a couple have a roommate. They should be on there own, relationships are hard enough to maintain without moving another personality into the home. Not to mention the possibility of one of them getting "the grass is greener" notion.

A couple should never have a room mate, trouble would arise with trust issues. Or the room mate might start developing feelings for one of the couple.
A couple should always have their own place, so that way they don't have to feel that their privacy is being invaded.

I think the only way a couple should share their apt. is if it's with another couple. Single people would cause too much distrust.
