sorry but if you want a "real beach " on long island you have to go on the south side[ ocean side] of the island.. robert moses beach, jones beach are probably about 2hrs from where you "land" on long island. a little closer, on the south fork would be "smiths point " at the end of william floyed parkway, or all the way to the south east tip at montaugh[sp] point. there is certainly water on the north side and all you'll have to do is ask at the ferry station for some accurate info,... but i doubt if you'll see a wave.... maybe on gardeners island... you may consider being land lubbers and go west toward cutchough, do some antiquing or visit the wineries......also there are a number of lighthouses you can visit..... if you have the time.... go to robert moses and you can do both .. visit a great lighthouse , and ride the waves, and sun bathe on the sand. north shore is mostly rocks and "river bed stones" along the shore line. sorry. good fishing though....

North Shore beaches are kinda rocky and on the Long Island Sound. If you really want the beach experience, go to the South Shore for the sandy beaches at the ocean. :)

Hi George..

I live on the east end of Long Island and here is the story..

One one side you have the sound and the beaches are nice. On the other side you have the bay and beaches there are also nice and the water slightly warmer.

Here is a site which might help you.
