Basically He is saying if we do what He commands and teaches, and live as close to the way He did, we are true followers of His. He is often referred to as "the truth", the way and the life. So really, to know the truth, is to know Him, and He will make you free. Free from sin and sorrow...

In the first century, Jesus spoke about freedom. He said to the Jews: “If you remain in my word, you are really my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31, 32) He was not speaking of freedom of speech or freedom of religion. He was certainly not speaking of liberation from the yoke of Rome, for which many Jews longed. No, this was something much more precious; a freedom granted, not by human laws or the whim of some human ruler, but by the supreme Sovereign of the universe, Jehovah. It was freedom from superstition, freedom from religious ignorance, and much, much more. Freedom granted by Jehovah is real freedom, and it will endure throughout eternity.
The truth that Jesus was talking about can open the way to freedom from sin. Jesus said: “If the Son sets you free, you will be actually free.” (John 8:36) So the truth that frees people is truth about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is only by faith in the sacrifice of Jesus’ perfect human life that anyone can be freed from sin and death.

The basis of this verse is that Jesus is "The Truth". He is truth. So by knowing "The Truth" (Jesus) we are set free from the shackles of sin. And by continuing in The Word (which is also Jesus, John 1:1) or constantly yearning for more of Jesus are relationship with him gets stronger and deeper or we "know" Him better.
I know that's not a lot of detail and I personally have no professional credentials but that's the verse as I understand it.

I think that Phillips, Craig & Dean describes it best in their song "This is how it feels to be free"
The word "Free" is of great importance. I believe that it is more like an experience, an awakening, a relationship. After reading the Bible the first time all the way through, I wanted to read it again and again. Each time I gain new insight. I know I'm free. But God is so amazing that words could never describe the experience. It is like trying to describe the sunrise to someone who has never seen.
The book of Romans is a great book to read from the Bible. This book might help you understand your verse. I like reading from the New Century Version the best because it is the easiest to understand. And I also prefer Study Bibles because they answer common questions. I have a variety. The Family Christian Store offer great savings to members. Membership is free.
Have a blast being a Chistian.

Jesus was telling the disciples to keep living in all that he taught them and to take that knowledge and spread it to other people, because he has taught them the truth. Christianity started with these 11 disciples, Judas hung himself after he realized what he had done by betraying Jesus.
The truth shall make you free, because only freedom can be aquired through knowing God and accepting Jesus Christ as our savior, that is the true freedom anyone will ever obtain.

Jesus is saying that if we walk as Jesus walked, we would be confirmed as His disciples and shall know the truth. The truth will set us free from slavery to sin. Christ's words are the truth.

Well I went to church most of my life and I have read that before and have heard it discussed in church. I believe that it means that if you choose to have faith and to be saved by Jesus and study the word and follow it's teaching,--then that is the truth. The truth of the word sets you free by helping you understand what it says and you are free because you are now saved and can go to heaven--you are set free from the sinful life and can be forgiven for all the sins we commit and that sets us free from eternity in Hell.
I hope this helps you. God Bless.

Jesus is telling you to continue his word. That means when you become a christian, don't just sit back and do nothing, witness to other people so they can also be saved. Before your saved you always have an empty feeling, like something is always missing in your life. When you come to know Jesus the emptiness goes away, because no matter what happens to you, you now know that there is always someone there beside you going through it with you, and someone to talk to.

We certainly all want to be free. The freedom Jesus spoke of is not freedom from sorrow and hurt. Any Christian that says they are free from all sorrow, hurt and that they never feel a void is a liar. Jesus didn't come to free us from all turmoil but from the bondage to sin and the wrath that is TO COME. We have to follow Him so that we will live in peace after we die. This life is still going to suck sometimes. Now, what does it mean to follow in His Word? Jesus paid for everything we need on the cross- our salvation, our growth with Him, our provision, ALL of it. To remain in His Word means to know that we CANNOT produce righteousness or deliverance by means of our works but that we must put our faith in Him and then His works will come through us automatically as HE DOES IT! Hope this helps! If you want more email me. I am a pastor and would love to be of any assistance I can.

It means that you have to read your Bible every day--(continue in my word--[the bible]. That means you have to (JAMES 1:23-25)follow and live (LUKE 4:4)completely what the word says--God's Will.
Now if you continue reading the Bible, then you are his disciples.
Eventually you will know the truth because God(2PETER 1:21; John 16:13) will speak it to you.
So the next one is :and ye shall know the (JOHN 17:17)truth". So when you know the truth; then it makes you free from sin. You will actually know the two sides (HEB.5:14--man's religion and God's religion).
To know the word--you have to seek (James 1:5)wisdom from God first; before you read your Bible.
1. Pray to God to guide you and ask for wisdom.
2. Don't interpet the Bible yourself; Please listen to God's Voice--he will tell you eventually what the Bible says. He has to me; he actually called me from 2nd Babylon(2Tim.1:9) into his (Eph.4:4; 5:27; Acts 20:28)church. He teaches me things all the time.
GOOD LUCK!!
