I have had generalized anxiety disorder since I was 18. I notice that there are a lot of forums devoted to people on one type of anti-depressant or another and a lot of the questions on "Answers" are about people with emotional disorders. I also read that people who move immigrate to America have a better chance of develpoing these disorders than if they just stayed in their home country. What gives? Why are we so afraid?

We are one of the most overworked, underpaid, and stressed out societies on earth, that is why.

In Europe they get 6 weeks paid vacation on top of the 4 or 5 holidays a month off to celebrate various occasions... They may pay higher taxes but they get free healthcare... no matter WHAT they have going on medically... Imgiane that... imagine that you work and you pay 40% taxes but in times of emergency you don't pay ANYTHING out of pocket, you don't have to worry about going into debt because you got sick...

American society is capitalist based and always will be and so americans will always be sacrificing their happiness for the american dream. Most of us will be sacrificing happiness just to put food on the table. It's very stressful trying to survive day to day in this country...

And they put a lot of drugs in the food... that's why Japan won't take our beef... they dope up the cattle, chickens, corn, everything. None of our food is very natural... so there are a lot of foriegn chemicals in our systems that cause problems for us.

Think about it....

Most people you know are stressed out and over worked. Surviving in this country is not easy. If at work you don't work overtime, or are taking a break for a minute you're not dedicated enough and either get fired or never get a promotion. Things get more expensive every day but salaries don't seem to go up any higher. Almost everyone is in deep in debt. Most marriages end up in divorce, so there's a lot of single parents out there. Not to mention high crime and health problems. People have extremely busy lives and there's a lot of pressure that goes into that. Most people have not just one but many of the problems on this list maybe all of them. Sounds like a good enough reason.

The US is a very stressful country to live in.
Most other countries have better systems to help those that are going through difficult times. In the US its up to the individual, you either sink or swim.

Moving is one of the most traumatic things you can do.
Changing jobs is as well.
That is one reason.

Another is the tremendous emphasis we have to make money and be financially successful.

It's a learned fear. Unfortuneatly people are afraid to deal with themselves, and face confrontation.
