How do you get Mozilla Thunderbird to run in the background?

My friend's got it such that a little notification appears in his system tray when he gets new e-mail from Thunderbird, without Thunderbird actually being open on the taskbar or anything. How do you configure this? I can't find the option anywhere.

You could use a combination of these two extensions:

The first one minimizes TB to the system tray, and the second one lets you configure an external notification tool to pop up a message. The site also offers links to external mail notifiers:
