That is called a LAP DANCE, which in some place is illegal. Girls at strip clubs do this sort of thing until the guy gets off.

All of us (men and women) are creatures of habit. We brush our teeth the same way, put on pants the same leg at a time, etc.
They're used to it. Once someone does something that conforms to their "comfort zone", they will tend to do it again and again.
I'm sure there's personal preference. Besides, having you sit in between theirs gives them (and yourself) a sense of security and safety.
For the "babe" thing, habit. I do it too. Just from habit. I don't mean anything sexual or degrading, just a habit.

I like "honey" and of course guys want you to sit on their laps...there is physical involvement without being intimate and it is a great way to flirt with each other.

I actually prefer a woman to sit next to me...I like to feel her warmth.
As far as pet names...I HATE 'baby'...every time I hear it I think of a stripper saying it as she's trying to whore you out of a drink.

its a closeness thing for me. I've never really had a girlfriend before, but the couple times i've come close, it felt nice to be able to hold them. Feels more emotional, but then i've always been a cuddler.
as for name, i've never had a girlfriend technically so i can't really say.
