The cheapest rent will be in the $600 - $800 month range. That is in not so safe areas or way way out. Sheapshead Bay Brooklyn or Arthur Avenue Bronx etc. (avoid East New York even though its cheap).
Monthly Metro card is $76
Utilities $60 - $120
Food $200

This is a very minimal life. If you want to do much besides "be" in the city, of course it will be more if you hit bars etc. Booze in NYC is very high.

Use resources below to see the realities and possibilities. Armed with these two tools you can at least Bergin to get a realistic picture of life in NYC.
PS-It took me five years to make the move to NYC. Glad I waited till I was sort of ready.

I'd say about $2500/mo. And that's assuming you don't own a car.

That varies pretty widely depending on how much you go out or where you shop.

Upper Manhattan (Harlem and above) is cheaper than the rest of the island, but a studio apartment is renting for about $1000/mo. these days. Queens and Brooklyn are cheaper, but the nicer Brooklyn neighborhoods are getting expensive, too.

The costs of goods and services on Manhattan tend to be a little higher than everywhere else, even basic groceries. And sales tax is high and applies to absolutely everything. So keep that in mind in your calculations.

there is an old saying [that comes to mind... only because i dont khow the answere...] : "if you have to ask , you probably cant afford it " i live on long island , no children, morgage paid[no rent].. i still need to come up with $1000 per month insurance clothes[very little] food [ no resturaunts], gas for the car, utilities and the big one .. taxes... this does not include medical insurance which i have none. i bet liveing cheaply in nyc would be at least that much. naturaly the outer boroughs [ bronx brkly, staten island would be far cheaper than manhatan given equal accomedations
